Good House Guests

We at Silverwolf Sanctuary base our spiritual paths on our connection with the natural world.  Part of that divine union means being a respectful guest on this planet that we call home.  We strive to make sustainable lifestyle choices that reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmentally responsible activity.

Buying Locally

Agri-business places a significant strain on the environment.  Ignoring natural cycles and healthy ecosystems, this system utilizes unsustainable energy sources and harmful chemicals to produce single species crops.  These crops are then refined and processed (losing considerable nutritional value), then packaged.  Finally, they are transported over long distances, consuming copious amounts of fossil fuels, to your mega-mart for commercial sale.  Is it any wonder that industrial agriculture is not sustainable?

A similar sequence occurs with commercial animal husbandry.  Aside from tainted meats from unregulated feed, growth hormones and antibiotics, the consumption of fuel for transporting meat is astronomical.

How do we break out of this vicious cycle? If you can, grow and raise your own foods.  If you can’t, buy locally!

            Benefits of Buying Locally

·        Local foods are healthier because you know where your food comes from & the practices of the farmer who raised them (no pesticides, antibiotics, etc.)

·        You reduce carbon footprint & our dependence on fossil fuels

·        Local foods are fresher & thereby tastier

·        You support your local economy by keeping your dollars in your community

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

The “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” concept is not a new one, but landfills are still growing by leaps and miles.

  • Eight out of ten plastic water bottles become landfill waste.
  • Each person in the US makes 4 ½ pounds of garbage a day (twice as much as 30 years ago)
  • For every 1 can of garbage you put on the curb, 70 cans of garbage were created in making the junk you threw away

Take a minute to recycle.  Use reusable grocery bags.  Buy a refillable water bottle.  Purchase products with minimal packaging, or reuse plastic containers instead of buying new ones! Think and make a difference!
